Real Work vs. Fake Work

Shifting Focus from Being Busy to Being Truly Productive

We all feel swamped sometimes. This is especially true in the fast-paced world of small business ownership. I’ll bet that if I were to ask how busy you all feel on a scale from 1 to 10, I bet many would say '10'. We have to be in order to be productive and get things done.

But I have to ask… are we genuinely productive or are we just busy?

Let's understand this difference with two scenarios.

Rachel’s Productive Day

Rachel starts her day by checking her to-do list. Important tasks, that will lead to clear wins for her company, are marked so she won’t miss them! Each task she tackles pushes her company forward. She’s exhausted at the end of the day, but can easily rattle off a list of projects that she has completed or made progress on.

Michelle’s Busy Day

Michelle's day is PACKED. She’s swamped with endless non-urgent emails and meetings without a clear agenda. Her meticulously crafted to-do list doesn’t have anything prioritized. She's tired at the end of the day, but can’t really point to any obvious wins.

Real Work is:

  • Essential: Central to your goals.

  • Productive: Tasks that bring clear results.

  • Goal-driven: Every task pushes you closer to bigger achievements.

Fake Work tends to:

  • Feel busy: Occupies time, but without real purpose.

  • Look productive: Seems crucial but lacks genuine impact.

  • Miss outcomes: They don’t really drive you or your business forward.

Wrapping Up

Being busy isn't the same as being truly productive. Especially for small business owners, it’s key to spot the difference between impactful tasks and busywork.

Reflect on your day and ask: "Is this getting me closer to my goals?" Remember, it's not about working non-stop; it's about working wisely. You’ve got this!

Something to Think About

Don’t just mindlessly try to do more tasks in less time.
Simplify your day and focus on what really matters.

  • Focus on quality over quantity

  • Seek genuine fulfillment over just checking things off a list.

  • Prioritize meaningful work

This Week’s Main Quest

It is time to start writing things down.

In our digital age, we often tell ourselves, "I’ll remember that." But, amid constant notifications and endless information, relying solely on memory can be overwhelming. That’s why the age-old practice of jotting down thoughts and tasks remains invaluable.

Why We Should Embrace Writing

With the surge of online data, our minds struggle to keep up. Even if our memory is sharp, today’s demands can easily lead us to overlook promises or deadlines. So, writing things down isn't about doubting our memory; it’s about giving it the support it needs.

Choosing Your Tool

There's a tool for everyone's preference. If you're tech-savvy, the Notes app or platforms like Notion are at your fingertips. For those who love tradition, a handy notebook offers a personal touch (it can even enhance creativity). Heck, you could even write things down on index cards and store them in a little box.

Your Quest

This week, prioritize writing things down somewhere. It’s a small step that can make a big difference, helping you stay organized and ready for every challenge. Embrace this habit and witness the clarity it brings.

This Week’s Side Quest

We all have been there – waking up with a sense of purpose, knowing that we have a list of tasks to accomplish, and by the end of the day, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of unchecked boxes. This common scenario is why this week's Side Quest challenge is both pertinent and timely. It's simple in its premise, yet profound in its impact: Identify the most important task for your day, write it down, and ensure you complete it. Here's why and how.

Why Focus on the Most Important Task?

  • We can break through the paralysis that often comes from an overloaded schedule.

  • Ensuring that we accomplish that one task provides a sense of achievement, a momentum that can carry us through the rest of the day.

  • Completing the most pivotal task means we prioritize quality and importance over sheer numbers.

How to Identify the Most Important Task?

Reflect on Priorities: Start by asking yourself, "What task, if completed today, would have the most positive impact on my goals or my life?" Your answer to this question will likely point you in the direction of your most essential task.

Evaluate Consequences: Think about the consequences of not completing a particular task. Which omission would lead to significant setbacks or stress? Identifying this can help highlight your primary task for the day.

Making it a Habit

The real value of this Side Quest challenge lies in making it a habit. It's not about doing it for a week and then slipping back into old routines. Instead, it's about integrating this practice into your daily life.

This isn’t about adding another item to your to-do list. It's about redefining how you approach your day, prioritizing what truly matters, and finding satisfaction in completing it.

So, as you embark on this quest, remember that while it may take practice to get right, the rewards are well worth the effort. Start today and witness the transformation in your productivity and mindset!

Taylor Swift Love GIF by Animanias

Look. I don’t get it either. But, it’s a thing…

It feels like the whole world is talking about Taylor Swift these last few weeks (And I don’t think it will ever slow down). I reached out to a Swiftie friend of mine for a list of Swiftie-approved songs that you can use in puns, jokes, etc in your newsletters and social posts over the next few weeks.

Some Suggestions:

  • Use a song title or lyric reference alongside a football reference in a social media post.

  • In all fairness to Travis Kelce… he shot his shot and wasn’t weird about it. This is going to be a TIMELESS reference to keep in your back pocket. (Unless it gets weird later. a.k.a. Don’t mess this up for us Travis.)

  • A lot of people are being cynical about this and assuming this is all a PR stunt. That’s another angle to take if you want to make a reference to it in a blog post or newsletter. (Note: It can be both real AND good PR.)

(No. I don’t really know why they need to be Swiftie-approved. But I was told I would be canceled if I just listed all of them.)
